Masaya Without Frontiers
Masaya Without Frontiers, or MASINFA, is PeaceWorks' first Nicaraguan partner organization, a relationship that began during the 1980's and continuing to this day. With the assistance of PeaceWorks and several European sister city and development organizations, MASINFA has brought drinking water to over 50,000 people in their region. They have also completed several housing, sanitation, and health projects.
For many years MASINFA received our aid shipments to Nicaragua, directing the supplies through customs and into the hands of many other non-governmental organizations. At times of national crises such as following the devastation of Hurricanes Joan and Mitch, recurring earthquakes, and other natural disasters, MASINFA took our aid to areas and people directly affected. While another organization now receives our cargo containers, we continue to send life-affirming aid to MASINFA to assist their programs and their people of Masaya.
Currently, MASINFA's program focuses on the improvement of their community's habitat through continued housing construction; training and education in civic engagement; heath care primarily through their cancer investigation, prevention and treatment clinic; and secondary education through their technical school NAMBUE at which over 500 students attend classes in English, computers, and training various technical and business trades.
MASINFA also continues to be a center of international cooperation, working with groups from Germany, Austria, Belgium, Spain, The United Kingdom, Japan, Holland, and Slovakia, in addition to several groups from the United States. These groups channel their aid through MASINFA and often sending international volunteers to work with them, bringing much creativity and often an international air to MASINFA's busy offices. MASINFA remains a place where an inspiration, an idea about how to deal with community needs, can come alive and flourish.
